The color temperature characterizes a light source by comparison with an ideal material emitting light only by the effect of heat.
The unit of color temperature is the kelvin.
To qualify the color of a light whose spectrum is continuous, we use the color temperature which has been defined thanks to the black body.
A blackbody is a light trap, which in theory absorbs all wavelengths of visible light.
By heating it, we noticed that it emits light whose color and intensity depend on its heating temperature.
The color temperature of a source therefore corresponds to the heating temperature of the black body so that it has an emission spectrum superimposable on that of the light source whose color temperature we want to determine.
The higher the temperature in Kelvin of an object, the colder it is to the eye (bluish tints) and vice versa (yellow, orange, red).
Regarding light sources whose spectrum is not continuous, the color rendering index (CRI) will allow the quality of the light to be assessed, as is the case with fluorescent tubes and LEDs for which the manufacturers indicate a CRI and color temperature value that has been set by it.
The CRI value is established by comparing the light produced by the lamp whose index is to be determined and a source whose spectrum is continuous and at the defined color temperature.
A high CRI value indicates that the lamp simulates the continuous source quite faithfully at this color temperature.
The color temperature only adjusts between yellow and blue.
