Watershed segmentation refers to a family of image segmentation methods that derive from the mathematical morphology which consider a grayscale image as a topographic relief whose flooding is simulated.
Principle
The algorithm applies to grayscale images.
The image is assimilated to a landscape whose altitude of each point is given by the intensity of the corresponding pixel.
High intensity pixels (255) correspond to peaks, while low intensity pixels (0) correspond to valley bottoms.
The principle of the algorithm is to partition the image according to a topographic approach, for this we look for the watersheds which are separated by ridge lines.
