Definition

The definition of an image is the amount of information contained in it.

In digital photography, an image is made up of pixels.

The definition is a value that quantifies an image in number of pixels.

The definition does not allow us to know the dimensions of the image, because we only know the number of pixels of which it is composed.

A pixel has no physical dimensions.

The physical dimensions of a pixel can vary from several millimeters on a side on a giant screen to a few µm on a smartphone panel.

Resolution

As soon as this image is displayed, the display surface of this image must be taken into account.

Once you have the display support, you have to fit all the information of the image on this surface.

The smaller this surface, the higher the resolution.

Resolution is the number of pixels per unit area.

Resolution is expressed in number of pixels per inch.
